Abstract:
The situation of children and adolescents in families with an alcohol problem has been neglected in the mental health field. A role model is therapeutically beneficial, because "role" is a metaphor which implies that change can take place within a short period of time. These roles can be considered generalizations on various functions which present a bind to the alcoholism system for the children. Behavior which conforms to these roles impairs the formation of personal identity, individuation from the family of origin, and the development of stable relationships outside of the nuclear family. Therapy should aim at activating resources, rather than focussing on deficits.
