Abstract:
A symposium entitled "Women in Physiology" was held on 30 July 2009 during IUPS in Kyoto. Seven female researchers from five countries presented their views. This article includes the summary of each speaker's talk. Figures are not included here because they have been uploaded to the web site of Women Physiologists of Japan (WPJ) ( http://square.umin.ac.jp/wpj/ ) with the permission of each speaker. Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH release.
