Summary

This study found that major depression significantly increases the risk of suicidal ideation and attempts in adolescents. Negative life events also predicted suicidal behavior in 12-14 year olds.

Background:

  • Understanding the prevalence and risk factors for suicidal behavior in early adolescence is crucial for prevention efforts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of suicidal behavior in children aged 12-14 years.
  • To identify risk factors associated with suicidal ideation and attempts in this age group.

Main Methods:

  • A two-stage epidemiologic study was conducted on a southeastern US community sample of 1,542 seventh and eighth graders.
  • Data collection involved the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, suicide scales, life-event schedules, family environment scales, and the Schedule for Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders in School Age Children (K-SADS) for mother-child interviews.

  • Prevalence of moderate to severe suicidal ideation was 4.0% in males and 8.7% in females.
  • Prevalence of suicide attempts was 1.9% in males and 1.5% in females.
  • Major depression was significantly associated with increased odds of both suicide ideation (OR=6.19) and attempts (OR=9.80). Undesirable life events were also significant predictors.

Conclusions:

  • Major depression and negative life events are significant risk factors for suicidal behavior in early adolescence.
  • These findings highlight the importance of screening for depression and addressing adverse life events in pediatric populations to mitigate suicide risk.
