Intractable hiccups, often debilitating, can signal underlying brainstem lesions. Surgical removal of a rhomboid fossa cavernoma resolved a patient's persistent hiccups, demonstrating a link between intracranial pathology and this symptom.

  • The lesion was surgically resected via suboccipital median craniotomy.

  • Histopathological analysis confirmed the lesion as a cavernoma.
  • The patient experienced complete resolution of hiccups immediately following microsurgical resection.
  • This case highlights the potential association between brainstem lesions and intractable hiccups.

Implications:

  • Intracranial pathologies, particularly brainstem lesions, should be considered in cases of intractable hiccups.
  • Microsurgical resection can be an effective treatment for hiccups caused by specific intracranial lesions.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention may significantly improve patient outcomes for this debilitating symptom.
