Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. Background:

  • Primary cutaneous melanoma is a significant cause of skin cancer mortality.
  • Incidence rates of melanoma are steadily increasing globally.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate clinical, epidemiological, and demographic aspects of cutaneous melanoma.
  • To correlate these factors with patient prognosis.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of clinical and epidemiological data from 84 primary cutaneous melanoma patients (1990-2007).
  • Histopathological examination of surgical specimens, including analysis of Breslow thickness, ulceration, and mitotic rate.

Main Results:

  • Melanoma incidence higher in sun-exposed areas; common sites include trunk (males) and lower limbs (females).
  • Breslow thickness, ulceration, and mitotic rate are significant prognostic indicators (p=0.043, p<0.001, p=0.0007 respectively).
  • A prognostic score combining ulceration, Breslow index, and mitotic index predicted systemic disease in 91.7% of patients with a score of three or higher; 5-year survival was approximately 70%.

Conclusions:

  • Mitotic rate is an important prognostic factor for cutaneous melanoma, aligning with upcoming TNM staging updates.
  • The proposed prognostic score warrants further investigation for clinical utility.
