Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between recent and usual lifetime sleep duration and the odds of obesity.
  • To assess overweight, obesity, and extreme obesity based on reported sleep duration.
  • To contribute population-based data to the understanding of sleep and weight management.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based telephone survey was conducted with 5549 women.
  • Data collected included usual and recent sleep duration, height, weight, and lifestyle factors.
  • Odds of overweight (BMI 25-29.9), obesity (BMI 30-39.9), and extreme obesity (BMI ≥40) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Women sleeping <6 hours recently had significantly higher odds of obesity (OR: 1.89) and extreme obesity (OR: 3.12) compared to those sleeping 7-7.9 hours.
  • Associations were weaker for short lifetime sleep duration.
  • Current short sleep (<7 hours) was linked to increased obesity odds, regardless of lifetime sleep patterns.

Conclusions:

  • Current short sleep duration is associated with a higher likelihood of obesity in women.
  • These findings suggest that recent sleep habits may be more influential than long-term patterns.
  • The study does not support sleep duration as a direct causal factor for obesity.
