  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a gold standard for RV function assessment, but Multi-Detector Computed Tomography (MDCT) offers potential advantages.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of 64-row Multi-Detector Computed Tomography (MDCT) in assessing right ventricular function.
  • To compare the accuracy of ECG-gated 64-MDCT with MRI for quantifying RV volumes and ejection fraction.

Main Methods:

  • 32 adult volunteers underwent ECG-gated 64-MDCT and cardiac MRI.
  • Key parameters assessed included right ventricular end-diastolic volume (RV-EDV), end-systolic volume (RV-ESV), stroke volume (RV-SVC), and ejection fraction (RV-EFC).
  • Bland and Altman analysis and Pearson's correlation were used to assess consistency between the two imaging modalities.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in RV volumes and ejection fraction between 64-MDCT and MRI (P = 0.29 to 0.66).
  • Excellent consistency was demonstrated for RV-EDV (r = 0.98), RV-ESV (r = 0.97), RV-SVC (r = 0.93), and RV-EFC (r = 0.88).
  • The agreement between modalities was within clinically acceptable limits.

Conclusions:

  • ECG-gated 64-MDCT is a highly accurate imaging technique for assessing right ventricular function.
  • 64-MDCT provides reliable quantitative measurements of RV volumes and ejection fraction, comparable to MRI.
  • This modality can be a valuable tool in the clinical evaluation of cardiac function.
