Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Adolescent Medicine
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Neuroblastoma diagnosis is rare in individuals over 15 years old.
  • Adolescent neuroblastomas are typically metastatic with a poor prognosis.
  • Common neuroblastoma sites include adrenal glands and paraspinal regions.

Observation:

  • A 17-year-old female presented with primary ovarian neuroblastoma.
  • The tumor was associated with a mature teratoma.
  • Disease workup revealed localized characteristics with no N-myc oncogene amplification.

Findings:

  • Surgical removal of the localized ovarian neuroblastoma was performed.
  • The patient underwent clinical, laboratory, and radiographic monitoring post-surgery.
  • No relapse was observed during a 3-year follow-up period.

Implications:

  • This case suggests surgical management may be viable for localized adolescent neuroblastoma.
  • It challenges the assumption of universally poor prognosis in older patients.
  • Further literature review is needed to understand rare neuroblastoma presentations.
