School refusal affects children with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) more than those with nonautistic intellectual disability. Higher intellectual levels and obsessive tendencies are linked to school refusal in PDD.

Area of Science:

  • Child Psychology
  • Developmental Disorders
  • Special Education

Background:

  • Investigating the prevalence and characteristics of school refusal in children with developmental disorders.
  • Understanding the relationship between intellectual functioning and school refusal in this population.

Observation:

  • School refusal was identified in 30 of 135 autistic and/or mentally retarded youngsters, with a higher incidence in pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) compared to nonautistic intellectual disability.
  • Children with PDD exhibiting school refusal had a significantly higher intellectual level than those without school refusal.

Findings:

  • A higher intellectual level and obsessive tendencies appear to be necessary precursors for school refusal in children with PDD.
  • The study highlights a distinct pattern of school refusal within the PDD population.

Implications:

  • Treatment strategies for school refusal in PDD should focus on creating a positive school environment and encouraging attendance.
  • Further research into the specific cognitive and behavioral factors contributing to school refusal in PDD is warranted.
