Summary

Post-mortem animal depredation by a pet dog caused facial wounds on a deceased owner. Canine antigens in tissue confirmed the dog

Background:

  • Post-mortem animal depredation is an uncommon but recognized phenomenon in forensic pathology.
  • Identifying the source of injuries on a corpse is crucial for accurate forensic investigation.

Observation:

  • A deceased woman presented with extensive facial wounds.
  • The wounds were suspected to be caused by her pet dog.

Findings:

  • Tissue analysis revealed both human and canine antigens.
  • This confirmed the presence of canine biological material on the body, indicating post-mortem injury by the dog.

Implications:

  • This case highlights that animal, specifically canine, depredation can occur shortly after death.
