Antidepressant medication may reduce suicide risk. This study found lower antidepressant detection in non-suicide controls compared to suicides, suggesting a protective effect for individuals receiving treatment.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Toxicology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Ecological studies show decreased suicide rates correlating with increased antidepressant use.
- This study investigates the individual-level hypothesis of antidepressants as a causal factor in suicide reduction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the association between antidepressant detection and suicide risk at an individual level.
- To test the hypothesis that antidepressant medication plays a causal role in preventing suicide.
Main Methods:
- Toxicological data from 18,922 suicides in Sweden (1992-2003) were analyzed.
- Data were linked with psychiatric hospitalization and sociodemographic registers.
- Comparison between suicide cases, non-suicide controls, and psychiatric in-patients was performed.
Main Results:
- Antidepressant detection was lowest in non-suicide controls.
- Detection rates were higher in suicides, particularly those without prior depression-related inpatient care.
- Suicides with a history of inpatient treatment for depression showed no increased antidepressant detection.
Conclusions:
- The lack of increased antidepressant detection in depressed individuals who died by suicide suggests a protective effect.
- Post-discharge antidepressant treatment may have prevented a substantial number of suicides among depressed patients.
- Findings support the role of antidepressant medication in suicide prevention.
