Assessment of the Mouth01:26

Assessment of the Mouth

A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.
Mouth Inspection
The inspection begins with visually examining the mouth for symmetry, color, and size.
Peptic Ulcer Disease III: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies01:28

Peptic Ulcer Disease III: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) presents with diverse symptoms depending on the location and severity of the ulcer. Clinical manifestations of peptic ulcer include dull pain and a burning sensation in the mid-epigastric region.
Few clinical manifestations differentiate gastric ulcers from duodenal ulcers. Distinctions in the location, timing, and pain relief are crucial for healthcare providers in differentiating between gastric and duodenal ulcers during clinical assessments.

Summary

Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a chronic condition with varied symptoms and sites. Stress significantly aggravates OLP, highlighting the need for long-term monitoring for potential malignancy.

Area of Science:

  • Oral Pathology
  • Dermatology
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting oral mucosa.
  • Understanding its clinical spectrum, triggers, and malignant potential is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical characteristics of Oral Lichen Planus (OLP).
  • To identify predisposing and aggravating factors contributing to OLP.
  • To assess the malignant potential of OLP.

Main Methods:

  • A case series study conducted between January 2006 and November 2007.
  • 95 patients aged over 12 years meeting OLP diagnostic criteria were enrolled.
  • Data collected included patient history, clinical examination, and biopsies when necessary; analyzed using SPSS.

Main Results:

  • The study included 95 patients (40 male, 55 female) aged 17-62.
  • Reticular OLP (54.7%) was most common, followed by erosive (32.6%).
  • Buccal mucosa was the most frequent site (31 patients); stress, spicy foods, and poor oral hygiene aggravated symptoms in 77 patients.

Conclusions:

  • Oral Lichen Planus (OLP) presents diverse clinical features and affects multiple oral sites.
  • Associated mucosal pigmentation was a unique observation.
  • Stress identified as a primary aggravating factor; long-term follow-up is essential for malignant potential assessment.
