A new set of 22 Mandarin monosyllabic word lists was developed for standardized speech recognition assessment in China. These lists demonstrate sufficient validity, reliability, and sensitivity for clinical use.

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Speech Science
  • Linguistics

Background:

  • Standardized speech recognition assessment tools are crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
  • Existing Mandarin speech materials may lack sufficient validity, reliability, and sensitivity for clinical application in China.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a set of Mandarin monosyllabic word lists for standardized speech recognition assessment.
  • The goal is to create a tool with high validity, reliability, and sensitivity for use in China.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty phonemically balanced lists of 25 Mandarin monosyllables were designed based on efficiency, familiarity, and coverage.
  • Three phases of testing involved normal-hearing and sensorineural hearing-impaired adults to establish list equivalence, reliability, and sensitivity using performance-intensity functions and critical difference calculations.

Main Results:

  • A set of 22 equivalent Mandarin monosyllabic lists was successfully developed, each containing 25 monosyllables and taking approximately 2 minutes to administer.
  • Performance-intensity functions for normal-hearing adults showed a recognition threshold of 8.30 dB HL and a slope of 4.0%/dB.
  • Critical difference values of 18.3% for normal-hearing and 16.3% for hearing-impaired adults were established for statistically significant assessment of speech recognition improvement.

Conclusions:

  • A new set of Mandarin monosyllabic lists has been successfully developed, offering sufficient validity, reliability, and sensitivity for clinical evaluations.
  • These lists provide a convenient and helpful standardized speech recognition assessment tool for use in China.
