Summary

Ultrasonic diagnosis of prostatitis is challenging. Prominent prostatic venous plexus, especially with periurethral halo or calculi, can indicate prostatic inflammation, aiding diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Prostate Health

Background:

  • Ultrasonic features of normal prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and prostatic carcinoma are established.
  • Ultrasonic diagnosis of prostatitis remains a diagnostic challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic significance of prostatic venous plexus in identifying prostatitis using transrectal sonography.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 190 transrectal sonograms for prostatic disease.
  • Correlation of ultrasonic findings with clinical and pathological results.
  • Assessment of prostatic venous plexus, periurethral halo zone, and prostatic calculi.

Main Results:

  • Prostatic venous plexus was present in 89 cases.
  • Prostatic venous plexus was considered a normal anatomical feature in only 28.5% of inflamed prostates.
  • The combination of prostatic venous plexus with periurethral halo zone and/or prostatic calculi increased diagnostic accuracy for prostatitis.

Conclusions:

  • Prostatic venous plexus alone is not a definitive sign of prostatitis.
  • The presence of prostatic venous plexus alongside periurethral halo zone and/or prostatic calculi is a significant indicator for diagnosing prostatic inflammation.
