The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

Summary

For shortened dental arch (SDA) cases, replacing molars with removable dental prostheses (RDP) showed similar tooth loss rates compared to no replacement. This study found no significant difference in outcomes between the two management strategies.

Background:

  • Evidence on managing shortened dental arch (SDA) cases is limited.
  • SDA involves complete molar loss in one dental arch.
  • Two common treatment approaches are molar replacement with removable dental prostheses (RDP) or no replacement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare outcomes and survival rates of RDP versus no replacement in SDA patients.
  • To test the hypothesis that different treatments lead to varying incidences of tooth loss.

Main Methods:

  • Multi-center study including 215 patients with complete molar loss in one jaw.
  • Patients were assigned to either RDP for molar replacement or no replacement (SDA concept).
  • Primary outcome measure was the first tooth loss after treatment.

Main Results:

  • Tooth loss occurred in 13 patients in the RDP group and nine patients in the SDA group.
  • Kaplan-Meier survival rates at 38 months were 0.83 for RDP and 0.86 for SDA.
  • The difference in tooth loss between the RDP and SDA groups was not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

  • No significant difference in tooth loss was observed between molar replacement with RDP and the shortened dental arch concept.
