  • Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) were assessed using the anamnestic (A(i)) and clinical (D(i)) Helkimo indices.
  • Jaw mobility (M(I)) and skin involvement (Modified Rodnan Skin Score - MRSS) were quantified.
  • Main Results:

    • TMD signs and symptoms were significantly more prevalent in SSc patients compared to controls (P < .001).
    • Severe TMD (D(i)III) was observed in 20% of SSc patients, versus none in controls.
    • Impaired jaw mobility was significantly higher in SSc patients (P < .001), with 77.1% experiencing severe impairment (M(I)II).
    • Patients with severe TMD or jaw mobility issues were more likely to receive cyclophosphamide treatment for severe cutaneous fibrosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Severe temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are highly prevalent in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients.
    • The findings suggest a significant link between TMD, jaw mobility, and the severity of skin fibrosis in SSc.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the pathophysiology and management implications of TMD in SSc.
