This study shows implanted peripheral nerve stimulation effectively reduced chronic shoulder pain in a stroke survivor. This innovative treatment offers a new option for managing poststroke pain and improving function.

  • Existing electrical stimulation devices for pain management have limitations.

Observation:

  • A novel, fully implanted microstimulator with a rechargeable battery was used.
  • The device was percutaneously implanted near the axillary nerve in an outpatient procedure.
  • A 58-year-old male stroke survivor with chronic hemiparesis received 12 weeks of daily stimulation.

Findings:

  • Shoulder pain significantly decreased from 8/10 to 4/10 after 12 weeks, and further to 3/10 at 3-month follow-up.
  • Improvements were noted in passive range of motion and motor function.
  • The procedure was well-tolerated with no adverse events.
