Background:

Effective pressure ulcer prevention protocols are crucial for reducing incidence.
Evidence-based content and practical application of these protocols are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the quality of pressure ulcer prevention protocols in Dutch home care settings.
To identify areas for improvement in current prevention strategies.

Main Methods:

Evaluation of 24 home-care agency protocols in the Netherlands in 2008.
Utilized a validated checklist developed by pressure ulcer experts.
Computed weighted and unweighted quality scores using descriptive statistics.

Main Results:

Protocols achieved a mean weighted quality score of 63.38/100.
75% of protocols emphasized daily skin observation at pressure points.
Only 42% adequately warned against ineffective or harmful materials.

Conclusions:

Home care provides attention to pressure ulcer prevention, but incidence remains a concern.
Lack of standardized protocols hinders consistent practice.
Systematic implementation of national standards is needed in the Netherlands.
