Analgesia and Pain Management01:25

Analgesia and Pain Management

Pain is critical to various clinical pathologies, provoking an urgent need for effective management. Pain, whether acute or chronic, is a complex neurochemical process. Its alleviation depends on the type, with nonopioid analgesics effective for mild to moderate pain, such as musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain, while neuropathic pain responds best to anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. For severe acute or chronic pain, opioids may be...

Summary

A new Multidimensional Pain Evaluation Scale was developed and validated for Portuguese speakers. This scale accurately ranks common acute and chronic pain descriptors, improving pain assessment in the Portuguese language.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Research
  • Psychometrics
  • Linguistics

Background:

  • Pain assessment is crucial for effective treatment.
  • Existing pain evaluation tools may lack cultural or linguistic adaptation.
  • A validated scale for the Portuguese language is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and statistically validate a pain evaluation scale for the Portuguese language.
  • To identify and rank the most frequently used descriptors for acute and chronic pain.
  • To adapt international pain assessment methodologies for a Portuguese-speaking population.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review to identify 308 pain descriptors.
  • Expert validation by six judges to select 100 acute and 100 chronic pain descriptors.
  • Statistical validation involving 493 health professionals and 146 patients using psychophysical methods and line-length estimations.

Main Results:

  • The study successfully developed and validated the Multidimensional Pain Evaluation Scale for Portuguese.
  • A high correlation (power = 0.99) was found between estimated and predicted descriptor rankings.
  • The scale effectively ranks frequently used descriptors for both acute and chronic pain.

Conclusions:

  • The Multidimensional Pain Evaluation Scale is a validated instrument for assessing pain in the Portuguese language.
  • This validated scale can enhance the accuracy and consistency of pain evaluation in Portuguese-speaking patients.
  • The study demonstrates the successful adaptation of psychophysical methods for cross-cultural pain assessment.
