Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

Extracorporeal Removal of Drugs: Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or those experiencing drug overdose often require extracorporeal methods to eliminate accumulated drugs and metabolites. Hemoperfusion, hemofiltration, and dialysis are the primary techniques to rapidly remove harmful substances without disrupting the patient's fluid and electrolyte balance. For those with compromised renal function, dosage adjustments of concurrent medications may be necessary during extracorporeal drug removal.Dialysis is a process...
Drug Elimination: Non-Renal Routes01:23

Drug Elimination: Non-Renal Routes

The liver plays a pivotal role in eliminating drugs and their metabolites, primarily through a process known as biliary excretion. This process involves the hepatocytes, the primary cells in the liver that generate bile. A range of transporters actively expels polar drugs or hydrophilic drug metabolites into the bile, which transports the drugs and metabolites into the small intestine. From here, they are eventually expelled from the body through feces. In some instances, the original drug or a...

Kidney Transplant III: Nursing Management

Postoperative Nursing Management for Kidney Transplant PatientsPostoperative nursing management care includes monitoring the surgical site, encouraging early movement, and promoting lung health through breathing exercises. Nurses also administer prescribed medications like H2-blockers, such as famotidine, or proton pump inhibitors, like omeprazole, to help prevent gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding. Fungal infections in the mouth and bladder can result from immunosuppressive and antibiotic...
Drug Accumulation During Multiple Dosing: Repetitive IV Injections01:21

Drug Accumulation During Multiple Dosing: Repetitive IV Injections

Calculating drug dosage and accumulation in multiple-dose regimens is crucial for achieving therapeutic efficacy while avoiding toxicity. This involves determining the plasma drug concentrations over time to optimize dosing schedules. The principle of superposition is fundamental in this process, allowing for the prediction of drug concentration in plasma following multiple doses based on single-dose data. The principle of superposition asserts that the plasma concentration-time curves from...

Summary

Needle exchange programs (NEPs) reduce syringe reuse and sharing among people who inject drugs. This study shows NEPs are effective harm reduction tools, even in small, non-urban areas.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Infectious Disease Prevention
  • Harm Reduction Strategies

Background:

  • Injection drug users face significant risks of HIV and HCV transmission.
  • Needle exchange programs (NEPs) aim to mitigate these risks by reducing syringe reuse and sharing, though evidence has been mixed.
  • Understanding NEP effectiveness in diverse settings is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the operational aspects and client demographics of a small, peri-urban legal NEP.
  • To assess the impact of the NEP on high-risk behaviors among participants.
  • To provide data on NEP effectiveness in non-urban settings.

Main Methods:

  • Interviews with NEP participants from 2003-2006.
  • Description of the program's operation and client population.
  • Comparison of baseline and follow-up measures to assess behavioral changes.

Main Results:

  • The HIV/AIDS Resource Center (HARC) Harm Reduction NEP serves a diverse, geographically widespread population.
  • Participants demonstrated reduced syringe reuse and decreased sharing of used syringes.
  • Increased likelihood of skin cleaning with alcohol before or after injection was observed.

Conclusions:

  • Limited data suggest NEPs are effective harm reduction tools in low-volume, non-urban settings.
  • NEPs serve as vital intervention points in peri-urban areas.
  • The findings support the expansion and continued operation of NEPs for infectious disease prevention.
