Insights

Multiple HIV strains, including novel recombinants, were found in Macao injection drug users. These findings highlight the role of human behavior in the rapid spread and evolution of HIV strains.

Area of Science:

  • Virology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) genetic diversity is a global health concern.
  • Understanding HIV subtype distribution is crucial for effective prevention and treatment strategies.

Observation:

  • Analysis of 14 HIV-infected injection drug users (IDU) in Macao revealed multiple HIV strains.
  • Sequencing identified subtypes F, G, and CRF12_BF, with a notable prevalence of CRF12_BF (n=2) and CRF14_BG (n=8).
  • Three cases of CRF01_AE were also detected, alongside one unclassifiable sequence.

Findings:

  • Novel recombinant HIV strains, CRF12_BF and CRF14_BG, were identified in Macao IDUs.
  • These specific BG and BF recombinant subtypes have not been previously reported in other Asian cities.
  • CRF14_BG represents a new introduction of this subtype among the IDU population in Macao.

Implications:

  • The findings suggest that long-distance travel and injection drug use facilitate rapid HIV spread and recombination.
  • The emergence of new HIV strains underscores the need for enhanced surveillance and targeted interventions in vulnerable populations.
  • This study provides critical insights into the molecular epidemiology of HIV in Macao and its potential implications for regional public health.
