What is Gene Expression?01:42

What is Gene Expression?

Overview
Gene expression is the process in which DNA directs the synthesis of functional products, that is, proteins. Cells can regulate gene expression at various stages. It allows organisms to generate different cell types and enables cells to adapt to internal and external factors.
Genetic Information Flows from DNA to RNA to Protein
A gene is a stretch of DNA that serves as the blueprint for functional RNAs and proteins. Since DNA is made up of nucleotides and proteins consist of amino...

Area of Science:

  • Developmental Biology
  • Genomics
  • Human Embryogenesis

Background:

  • Human embryogenesis involves complex, coordinated gene expression for organ and tissue development.
  • The period between weeks 4-9 is critical for organogenesis but remains understudied at the genomic level.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To perform a genome-wide expression analysis during weeks 4-9 of human embryogenesis.
  • To identify novel genes and pathways involved in this critical developmental period.
  • To create a searchable database of gene expression profiles for human development research.

Main Methods:

  • Genome-wide expression analysis of human embryos (weeks 4-9).
  • Identification and analysis of significantly regulated genes.
  • Development of a searchable gene expression database.

Main Results:

  • Approximately 50% of human genes are expressed, with 18.6% significantly regulated during weeks 4-9.
  • >5000 regulated genes identified, many previously unknown in animal development.
  • Genes involved in this period are distinct from early embryogenesis genes.

Conclusions:

  • This study identifies key genes and pathways in a critical, understudied period of human development.
  • The developed database is a valuable resource for identifying novel developmental genes and functions.
  • Coordinated regulation of genes within developmental processes was observed.
