Muscles of the Forearm that Move the Hand and Fingers01:16

Muscles of the Forearm that Move the Hand and Fingers

The muscles of the forearm that move the wrist, hand, and digits are numerous and diverse. They can be classified into two groups based on their location and function — the anterior and posterior compartment muscles.
Anterior Compartment
The anterior compartment muscles originate from the humerus. They primarily function as flexors and are also known as flexor muscles. They typically insert on the carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. The superficial layer includes the flexor carpi radialis,...
Muscle Stimulation Frequency01:22

Muscle Stimulation Frequency

The contraction strength of muscles is regulated by motor neurons, which modulate the frequency of action potentials dispatched to the motor units based on the body's requirements. This process of varying the muscle stimulation frequency allows muscles to contract with a force that is precisely tailored to the needs of the moment, whether lifting a feather or a heavy box.
Wave summation
At low firing rates, motor neurons induce individual twitch contractions in muscle fibers. These twitches...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Hand Surgery
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders

Background:

  • Trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis) commonly affects middle-aged women.
  • Repetitive hand use, like in musicians, can exacerbate or cause this condition.

Observation:

  • A rare case of a male musician presented with six trigger fingers, predominantly affecting the left hand.
  • The patient's symptoms were linked to extensive guitar playing.
  • Previous local steroid injections were ineffective.

Findings:

  • Surgical release of the affected tendons was performed.
  • The patient experienced complete symptom resolution four weeks post-surgery.
  • The surgical outcome enabled the patient to return to playing the guitar pain-free.

Implications:

  • Surgical treatment can be highly effective for complex or refractory trigger finger cases.
  • This case underscores the importance of considering occupational hand use in trigger finger etiology.
  • Restoration of hand function is crucial for musicians' quality of life and career.
