Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Ophthalmic Surgery

Background:

  • Postenucleation socket syndrome can cause disfigurement.
  • Intraorbital implants are used to manage these symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical findings, development, and management of intraorbital conjunctival cysts.
  • To highlight this rare complication of socket surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patients who received intraorbital implants.
  • Analysis of cases that developed intraorbital conjunctival cysts.

Main Results:

  • Five of 149 patients (3%) developed intraorbital conjunctival cysts.
  • All affected patients had received a secondary implant.
  • Four patients required additional surgery due to conjunctival deficiency or recurrence.

Conclusions:

  • Intraorbital conjunctival cysts are a rare but serious complication after intraorbital implant surgery.
  • Management can be challenging, often necessitating further surgical procedures.
