Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Human-Computer Interaction

Background:

  • Momentary cognitive lapses impair sustained attention tasks like driving.
  • Drowsiness during attention tasks is linked to specific brainwave patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate brain dynamics during cognitive lapses.
  • Assess the impact of auditory feedback on performance and brain activity.
  • Explore real-time EEG monitoring for cognitive state assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Virtual reality driving simulation with 30-channel EEG and behavioral data collection.
  • Independent component analysis and short-time Fourier transform for EEG analysis.
  • Delivery of arousing auditory feedback during non-responded events.

Main Results:

  • Cognitive lapses showed characteristic alpha- and theta-band spectral changes in occipital EEG.
  • Auditory feedback immediately improved behavioral responses to lane deviations.
  • Improved performance correlated with theta- and alpha-band spectral suppression.
  • Auditory feedback effects on brain activity persisted for at least 30 seconds.

Conclusions:

  • EEG can extract cognitive state information during sustained attention.
  • Online assessment and correction of brain networks are feasible.
  • Auditory feedback is effective in mitigating performance deficits due to cognitive lapses.
