    Summary

Neighborhood characteristics significantly impact internet use for healthcare information, especially in underprivileged areas. Promoting internet access and training can reduce health inequalities.

    The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Health Informatics
    • Sociology of Health

    Background:

    • The internet is a vital tool for healthcare information dissemination and promotion.
    • Individual factors influencing online health information use are known, but neighborhood effects are understudied.
    • Area of residence and neighborhood characteristics may significantly influence internet access for health information.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the impact of neighborhood and area of residence characteristics on internet use for accessing healthcare information.
    • To investigate the interplay between individual and contextual factors in online health information seeking.
    • To identify disparities in internet-based health information access related to residential context.

    Main Methods:

    • Multilevel logistic regression analyses were performed.
    • Data were drawn from the SIRS cohort, a representative sample of the Paris metropolitan area population (2005).
    • Neighborhood variations in general internet use and specific healthcare information searches were examined.

    Main Results:

    • Significant neighborhood variations were found in both general internet use and healthcare information seeking.
    • These variations decreased when individual factors were considered (composition effect).
    • Variations disappeared when area of residence characteristics were included (contextual effect), highlighting neighborhood-level influences.
    • Individual internet access inequalities were greater in underprivileged areas.
    • Internet use for healthcare information was higher in neighborhoods with a larger proportion of unqualified individuals, despite individual obstacles.

    Conclusions:

    • Neighborhood context plays a crucial role in shaping internet use for healthcare information, beyond individual factors.
    • Addressing social inequalities in healthcare requires promoting internet access and digital literacy training for individuals and healthcare professionals.
    • The internet can be leveraged for public health, prevention, and healthcare promotion if access and training are equitably provided.
