Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) compartments (deep [DSAT] and superficial [SSAT]) and fat-free mass (FFM).
  • To compare these relationships between South Asian and European cohorts, and between men and women.

Main Methods:

  • Healthy South Asian and European participants (n=408) underwent dual energy X-ray absorptiometry for FFM and computed tomography (CT) for SAT area assessment.
  • SAT was segmented into superficial (SSAT) and deep (DSAT) compartments.
  • Linear regression analyses were performed, with DSAT and SSAT as dependent variables and FFM and ethnicity as primary independent variables, adjusting for covariates.

Main Results:

  • South Asian men had significantly higher DSAT, SSAT, and body fat mass (BFM) than European men.
  • In adjusted models, South Asians demonstrated greater DSAT relative to FFM compared to Europeans.
  • Women exhibited higher SSAT and lower DSAT relative to FFM than men, irrespective of ethnicity.

Conclusions:

  • South Asians possess greater amounts of deep subcutaneous adipose tissue (DSAT) compared to Europeans.
