Cataract surgery outcomes in eyes with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) were similar to controls, with no increased surgical complications. However, PEX eyes had higher risks for glaucoma and coronary issues.

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is a condition that can affect the eye.
Cataract surgery is a common procedure to restore vision.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare cataract surgery outcomes in eyes with and without pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX).
To analyze the clinical features associated with PEX.

Main Methods:

A retrospective study compared 52 eyes with PEX to 52 control eyes undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
Data included pre- and post-operative visual acuity, pupil dilation, intraocular pressure, and complications.

Main Results:

No significant difference in surgical complication rates or visual acuity outcomes between PEX and control groups.

PEX eyes showed poorer pupil dilation (48% vs 4%) and higher rates of associated glaucoma/ocular hypertension (40% vs 10%).

PEX was bilateral in 72% of cases and associated with increased risk of glaucoma and coronary ischemia.

Conclusions:

Phacoemulsification cataract surgery is safe in PEX eyes without significant phacodonesis or subluxation.
PEX is linked to a higher incidence of glaucoma and coronary heart disease.
While visual outcomes are similar, PEX eyes may require more time to achieve maximal visual acuity.
