Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the usability of the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA) EHR system.
  • To identify specific areas for user interface enhancement within AHLTA.

Main Methods:

  • Employed Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) using Goals, Operators, Methods, and Selection rules (GOMS) to evaluate the AHLTA interface.
  • Utilized the Keystroke Level Model (KLM) to estimate task execution times.
  • Classified task steps into mental and physical operators, with independent analysis and inter-rater reliability checks.

Main Results:

  • Analysis of 14 tasks revealed an average of 106 steps per task.
  • Users spent approximately 22 minutes on data entry for all tasks, with 11 minutes involving demanding mental operators.
  • High inter-rater reliability (0.8 kappa) confirmed the consistency of the GOMS method.

Conclusions:

  • AHLTA performance is characterized by a high number of steps, significant execution time, and substantial mental operator usage.
  • User interface improvements should focus on reducing the total number of steps and minimizing required mental effort.
