Continence problems in the house-bound patient: causes and treatment

Abstract:
This article provides an overview of faecal continence with a focus on the house-bound patient. To understand incontinence it is essential to understand how continence is achieved. Causes of faecal incontinence are discussed, including anal sphincter damage. Finally the nursing, medical and surgical treatment options are explored. This includes medication, biofeedback and the formation of a colostomy.
