A patient experienced acute transient phlebitis during an intravenous eptifibatide injection. Symptoms resolved rapidly upon discontinuation, marking the first reported case of this adverse event.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pharmacology
- Clinical Medicine
Background:
- Eptifibatide is an antiplatelet medication used to prevent thrombotic events.
- Intravenous administration is common for rapid therapeutic effect.
Observation:
- A 56-year-old male developed acute transient phlebitis in the right cephalic vein during eptifibatide infusion.
- Phlebitis symptoms resolved within minutes after discontinuing the eptifibatide injection.
Findings:
- This case represents the first documented instance of acute transient phlebitis associated with intravenous eptifibatide administration in the English-language literature.
- The rapid resolution of phlebitis suggests a direct, transient reaction to the drug or its administration method.
Implications:
- Clinicians should be aware of the potential for acute transient phlebitis as an adverse effect of intravenous eptifibatide.
- Prompt recognition and discontinuation of the drug can lead to rapid symptom resolution.
- Further investigation may be warranted to understand the mechanism of this adverse reaction.
