Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I01:25

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...

Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:
Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention01:26

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...
Fruit Development, Structure, and Function01:58

Fruit Development, Structure, and Function

Fruits form from a mature flower ovary. As seeds develop from the ovules contained within, the ovary wall undergoes a series of complex changes to form fruit. In some fruits, such as soybeans, the ovary wall dries; in other fruits, such as grapes, it remains fleshy. In some cases, organs other than the ovary contribute to fruit formation; such fruits are called accessory fruits.
Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Summary

The transtheoretical model (TTM) effectively predicts adult fruit and vegetable consumption, showing significant stage differences in self-efficacy and decisional balance. Most TTM processes increase early in stages but then plateau.

Area of Science:

  • Health Behavior Change
  • Nutrition Science
  • Psychology

Background:

  • The transtheoretical model (TTM) is a widely used framework for understanding behavior change.
  • Its applicability to specific dietary behaviors, such as fruit and vegetable consumption, requires empirical validation.
  • Understanding stage-specific factors is crucial for designing effective interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the validity of the transtheoretical model (TTM) in explaining adult fruit and vegetable consumption patterns.
  • To examine the relationships between TTM constructs (stages, processes, self-efficacy, decisional balance) and dietary behavior.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey using random-digit dialing was conducted in Hawaii with 700 adult participants.
  • Data were collected on TTM stages, processes of change, self-efficacy, decisional balance, and self-reported fruit/vegetable intake.
  • Confirmatory factor analysis and analyses of variance were employed to test the measurement models and stage differences.

Main Results:

  • The distribution across TTM stages was: precontemplation (33%), contemplation (4%), preparation (37%), action (3%), and maintenance (23%).
  • The measurement models for TTM processes, self-efficacy, and decisional balance demonstrated good data fit.
  • Significant differences in TTM constructs and fruit/vegetable consumption were observed across stages, with medium effect sizes.

Conclusions:

  • The study confirmed TTM's applicability to fruit and vegetable consumption, with adequate fit for measurement models.
  • TTM predictions regarding stage-related differences in self-efficacy, decisional balance, and consumption were supported.
  • Experiential and behavioral processes generally increased in earlier stages and then stabilized.
