The office management of arthritis

In this article, we review some of the common and more important arthritic disorders likely to be encountered in the physician's office. We emphasize that many body systems other than the musculoskeletal may frequently be affected in any patient with arthritis. Most of the investigation and management of these disorders can be carried out from the physician's office thereby enabling the patient to remain at home and on the job.The rational and conservative use of drugs to control arthritis pain and inflammation is outlined and systemic corticosteroids are rarely necessary except in the specific circumstances cited. Ancillary disciplines should be drawn into the management program and this will contribute favorably to the emotional support and education of the patient. Hospitalization is an essential element in the overall management of the patient and should not be considered a last resort measure or confession of therapeutic failure.
