Chronic crying in infancy and early childhood
Insights
Infant crying is a common issue. A simple behavioral therapy, involving consistent parental response, can resolve excessive infant crying within four days.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Child Psychology
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Infant crying is a frequent and distressing issue for parents, often lacking clear documentation.
- Crying typically progresses through distinct stages, with hunger being a primary early cause.
Purpose of the Study:
- To outline a straightforward therapeutic approach for managing excessive infant crying.
- To empower physicians in guiding parents through effective behavioral interventions.
Main Methods:
- A behavioral therapy protocol is described, focusing on consistent parental responses.
- Key intervention: Avoid picking up the infant after bedtime routines (lights off, door closed).
Main Results:
- A firm and consistent approach is anticipated to resolve crying within four days.
- Parental confidence and clear, sympathetic instructions are crucial for success.
Conclusions:
- Early physician involvement in the initial stage of crying (e.g., hunger) is recommended.
- Behavioral therapy, with consistent parental adherence, offers a rapid solution for infant crying.
Abstract:
Infant crying is a poorly documented but very common and distressing occurrence. It generally goes through three stages and the physician should involve himself at the first stage, which is usually concerned with hunger. The physician must restore the parents' confidence and give positive direction. Therapy is simple and involves not picking up the baby (or allowing the small child out of bed) once he has been put to bed, the light turned off and the door closed. A firm attitude should be sufficient to cure the problem in four days, providing the parents are given definite but sympathetic instructions.
