Thoracotomy: its role in diagnosis of patients with lung lesions
Abstract:
Although thoractomy should be avoided where possible, it should not be passed over as a diagnostic tool of great accuracy. Patient discomfort can be lessened by various refinements of technique, and prompt action can often avert major problems at their outset. Bronchoscopy and mediastinoscopy are good diagnostic aids and should usually be booked together, since bronchoscopy alone often does not reveal enough information from which to make a diagnosis.
