Metacarpal and metatarsal fractures in dogs

Metacarpal and metatarsal fractures are common causes of lameness in dogs and are often due to high-energy trauma. Potentially life-threatening injuries may occur concurrently and must be managed immediately, before injuries to the metacarpals or metatarsals are addressed. The diagnosis is based on the history, physical examination findings, and radiographs. Conservative and surgical therapies exist; however, definitive recommendations regarding the optimum treatment modality have not been established.
