Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease characterized by fibrosis and vascular abnormalities.
  • Subclinical atherosclerosis is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular events.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc).
  • To assess the lipid profiles and carotid artery characteristics in SSc patients compared to controls.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-six SSc patients meeting American College of Rheumatology criteria were included, excluding those with confounding conditions.
  • Serum lipid levels (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, LDL-C) and carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) were measured.
  • Age- and sex-matched non-smoking volunteers served as controls.

Main Results:

  • SSc patients exhibited dyslipidemia, with low HDL-C and high TC, and a significantly higher atherogenic LDL-C/HDL-C ratio.
  • Common carotid artery IMTs were significantly higher in SSc patients compared to controls.
  • Logistic regression revealed an independent association between SSc, IMTs, and TC.

Conclusions:

  • Systemic sclerosis patients demonstrate an atherogenic lipid profile and subclinical atherosclerosis.
  • These findings suggest an elevated risk for cardiovascular events in the SSc population.
