Summary

Commencing midwifery students understand the importance of personal qualities for a good midwife but lack knowledge of competence. Addressing this gap is crucial for student retention and effective practice.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore commencing students' perceptions of the essential attributes of a good midwife.
To identify potential links between student views and course attrition.

Qualitative thematic analysis was employed.
The study was conducted in Melbourne, Australia.
All 41 commencing midwifery students in 2008 were invited to participate.

Students identified key attributes for midwives, primarily in the affective domain.

Four themes emerged: personal qualities/attitudes, belief in women/natural birth, compatible work ethic, and additional attributes.

Most identified attributes focused on personal qualities rather than clinical competence.

Conclusions:

Commencing students demonstrate a strong grasp of affective attributes for midwifery.
There is a noted deficiency in understanding the knowledge and competence required for midwifery practice.
A small cohort expressed overconfidence in their advisory abilities, highlighting a need for intervention.
