Filiform polyposis, a rare colon condition, can occur independently of inflammatory bowel disease. This study highlights seven cases of sigmoid colon polyposis requiring periodic follow-up.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Pathology
Background:
- Filiform polyposis is a rare condition with unclear causes.
- It is often associated with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), intestinal tuberculosis, or histiocytosis X.
Observation:
- Seven cases of filiform polyposis were observed.
- The polyps were primarily located in the left colon, particularly the sigmoid area.
- These cases lacked association with inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal tuberculosis, or histiocytosis X.
Findings:
- The polyps presented as multiple, finger-like, stalactite-appearing lesions.
- Histopathologic examination revealed diverse components among the different polyps and patients.
- The observed filiform polyposis in the sigmoid colon did not show a high oncogenic potential.
Implications:
- Filiform polyposis can occur without associated systemic or inflammatory conditions.
- Periodic monitoring of sigmoid colon filiform polyposis is recommended due to its potential, albeit low, for oncogenesis.
- Further research into the pathogenesis of isolated filiform polyposis is warranted.

Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...
Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...

Diagnostic studies
A colonoscopy is the definitive screening test, distinguishing ulcerative colitis from other colon diseases with similar symptoms. During a colonoscopy test, inflamed mucosa with exudate ulcerations can be observed, and biopsies are taken to determine the histologic characteristics of the colonic...
