Protein Diffusion in the Membrane01:24

Protein Diffusion in the Membrane

Proteins show rotational as well as lateral diffusion across the membrane. The lateral diffusion of proteins was confirmed through the cell fusion experiment where mouse and human cells were fused, resulting in hybrid cells. When the human and mouse cells fused, the specific membrane proteins on human and mouse cells were marked with the red and green-fluorescent markers, respectively. Initially, the red and green fluorescence was located on the respective hemisphere of the cell. As time...
Diffusion01:21

Diffusion

Diffusion is a type of passive transport. In passive transport, a substance tends to move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until the concentration is equal across the space. For example, take the diffusion of substances through the air. When someone opens a perfume bottle in a room filled with people, the perfume is at its highest concentration in the bottle and is at its lowest at the edges of the room. The perfume vapor will diffuse, or spread away, from the...
Diffusion01:12

Diffusion

Diffusion is the passive movement of substances down their concentration gradients—requiring no expenditure of cellular energy. Substances, such as molecules or ions, diffuse from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration in the cytosol or across membranes. Eventually, the concentration will even out, with the substance moving randomly but causing no net change in concentration. Such a state is called dynamic equilibrium, which is essential for maintaining overall...
Spontaneity02:21

Spontaneity

A spontaneous process is one that occurs naturally under certain conditions. A nonspontaneous process, on the other hand, will not take place unless it is “driven” by the continual input of energy from an external source. Processes have a natural tendency to occur in one direction under a given set of conditions. Water will naturally flow downhill (spontaneous process), but uphill flow (nonspontaneous process) requires outside intervention such as the use of a pump. Iron exposed to the earth’s...
Carrier Transport01:21

Carrier Transport

The generation of electrical current in semiconductors is fundamentally driven by two mechanisms: drift and diffusion. These processes are essential for the functionality and performance of semiconductor-based devices.
Drift Current:
The drift of charge carriers is started by an external electric field (E). Charged particles, such as electrons and holes, experience an acceleration between collisions with lattice atoms. For electrons, this results in a drift velocity (vd) given by:
Entropy Change in Reversible Processes01:10

Entropy Change in Reversible Processes

In the Carnot engine, which achieves the maximum efficiency between two reservoirs of fixed temperatures, the total change in entropy is zero. The observation can be generalized by considering any reversible cyclic process consisting of many Carnot cycles. Thus, it can be stated that the total entropy change of any ideal reversible cycle is zero.
The statement can be further generalized to prove that entropy is a state function. Take a cyclic process between any two points on a p-V diagram.

Area of Science:

  • Physics
  • Complex Systems Analysis
  • Nonlinear Dynamics

Background:

  • Anomalous diffusion describes non-standard particle movement in complex systems.
  • Characterizing stochastic dynamics in systems with nonlinear interactions is challenging.
  • Identifying anomalous diffusion requires robust analytical methods.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a novel interpolation expression for identifying anomalous diffusion.
  • To utilize the second-order difference moment (Kolmogorov transient structural function) as a key characteristic.
  • To apply the method to various complex natural processes.

Main Methods:

  • Developing an interpolation expression based on the second-order difference moment.
  • Analyzing the stochastic dynamics of systems in a steady state (large time intervals).
  • Applying the procedure to experimental data from quantum dot fluorescence, X-ray emissions, Rayleigh-Bénard convection, and seismic geoelectrical signals.

Main Results:

  • The proposed interpolation expression adequately describes the experimental difference moment in all tested complex processes.
  • Anomalous diffusion was confirmed to manifest in blinking fluorescence, accreting object emissions, convection fluid dynamics, and seismic signals.
  • The method provides a reliable way to identify and quantify anomalous diffusion parameters.

Conclusions:

  • The developed method effectively identifies anomalous diffusion in complex systems.
  • The findings suggest anomalous diffusion is prevalent in a wider range of natural phenomena than previously recognized.
  • This research expands the toolkit for analyzing complex system dynamics.
