Obesity and overweight status did not significantly impact overall sexual function scores in women. However, higher body mass index (BMI) and weight negatively correlated with satisfaction and orgasm, indicating specific aspects of female sexual function are affected.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Endocrinology
- Human Sexuality
- Obesity Research
Background:
- While male obesity is linked to sexual dysfunction, the female relationship remains unclear.
- Few studies assess female sexual function index (FSFI) and body weight in women.
- Obesity's impact on female sexual function requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in obese and overweight women.
- To explore the relationship between body fat, hormonal levels, and sexual function in women.
- To compare sexual function metrics between obese/overweight women and a healthy control group.
Main Methods:
- Evaluated 45 obese/overweight women and 30 healthy controls using medical/sexual history and FSFI.
- Measured serum levels of prolactin, cortisol, LH, FSH, DHEA-S, testosterone, estradiol, and SHBG.
- Analyzed correlations between anthropometric measurements, hormone levels, and FSFI scores.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in overall FSFI scores between obese and control groups (P=0.74).
- High prevalence of FSD observed: 86% in obese patients and 83% in controls.
- Significant negative correlations found between BMI and orgasm (r=-0.413), and satisfaction (r=-0.305).
- Testosterone levels negatively correlated with satisfaction scores (r=-0.385).
Conclusions:
- Obesity is not a primary driver of overall female sexual dysfunction but impacts specific aspects like satisfaction and orgasm.
- High rates of FSD exist in both obese and healthy women, suggesting multifactorial causes.
- Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay between weight, hormones, and female sexual health.
