Birth Control Methods01:22

Birth Control Methods

Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although vasectomy...
Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems01:21

Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems

Controlled-release systems for intravaginal and intrauterine drug delivery have been developed primarily for the administration of contraceptive steroid hormones. These delivery routes circumvent first-pass hepatic metabolism, thereby enhancing bioavailability and allowing for reduced systemic dosages compared to oral administration. Such approaches contribute to improved therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance, particularly in long-term contraceptive regimens.Intravaginal Drug Delivery...
Drug Delivery: Enteral Route01:18

Drug Delivery: Enteral Route

The enteral drug administration involves three primary routes: oral, sublingual, and buccal. Oral ingestion is the most prevalent, safe, economical, and convenient method for drug administration. However, it has certain drawbacks, including limited absorption due to the drug's low water solubility or poor membrane permeability, possible emesis from GI mucosa irritation, destruction of drugs by digestive enzymes or low gastric pH, and irregular absorption along with food or other drugs.

Hormonal Regulation01:33

Hormonal Regulation

The renin-aldosterone system is an endocrine system which guides the renal absorption of water and electrolytes, thus managing blood pressure and osmoregulation. Activation of the system begins in the kidneys with a small cluster of cells adjacent to the afferent and efferent blood vessels of the renal corpuscle. As the nephrons are filtering blood, juxtaglomerular cells monitor blood pressure. If they detect a decrease in pressure, they release the hormone renin into the bloodstream.
Hormonal Regulation01:40

Hormonal Regulation

Hormones regulate a significant portion of digestion through activation of the neuroendocrine system. The neuroendocrine system of digestion contains many different hormones all with multiple functions that are both, directly and indirectly, involved in digestion.
Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle01:22

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle

The ovarian cycle regulates endometrial changes throughout a single menstrual cycle via the coordinated action of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotrophins.
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH release.

Summary

Adolescent emergency contraception (EC) knowledge is limited in Morelos, Mexico, with only 45% possessing correct information. Targeted educational interventions are crucial to improve understanding and use of EC among students.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Reproductive Health
  • Adolescent Health

Background:

  • Emergency contraception (EC) is vital for preventing unintended pregnancies.
  • Understanding adolescent knowledge and use of EC is crucial for effective public health strategies.
  • Previous research indicates varying levels of EC awareness globally, necessitating regional assessments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess emergency contraception (EC) knowledge and usage patterns among public school students in Morelos, Mexico.
  • To identify demographic and behavioral factors associated with correct EC knowledge in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,550 students (ages 14-24) in Morelos, Mexico.
  • Data were collected in 2003-2004.
  • Logistic regression analysis was employed to determine factors linked to accurate EC knowledge.

Main Results:

  • Only 45% of students had correct knowledge of EC, despite 60% having heard of it.
  • The reported use of EC among sexually active students was 3%.
  • Factors associated with correct EC knowledge included being female, sexually active, middle-income, living in semi-urban areas, and alcohol consumption.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescent knowledge regarding emergency contraception (EC) in Morelos is notably deficient.
  • There is a clear need for developing and implementing targeted educational messages on the correct use of EC for adolescents.
  • Public health initiatives should address the identified factors to improve EC awareness and access.
