Human brain weight and acetylcholinesterase in relation to aging

Abstract:
Brain weight and acetylcholinesterase activity in ten brain areas of 23 males and 22 females have been determined post mortem. Average brain weight in males was higher than in females. Acetylcholinesterase activity in the ten areas was equal in both sexes. Neither brain weight nor acetylcholinesterase content was negatively correlated with age in any significant range. Involution of the brain with normal aging is not supposed to be due to neuron degeneration.
