[Acquiring power]

Many nurses are intimidated by the notion of power, as if it somehow doesn't apply to them. They have only to take stock of their vast store of knowledge, experience, and accomplishments over the years to put themselves on the path to empowerment. Author Claire Leblanc highlights some of the outstanding achievements of the nursing profession--for example, playing an active role in the reform of the health care system. She also talks about future challenges, with respect to the changing role of the nurse and the need for higher educational standards. Co-operation and a collective sense of professional pride are the keys.
