On a possible mechanism of abnormal brain development in experimental hyperphenylalaninemia

Abstract:
It has been observed that high levels of phenylalanine inhibit the synthesis of sulfatides in brain. A possible scenario leading to a decreased number of synaptic contacts in the adult is developed as an explanation for brain dysfunction. The evidence for each of the steps of this scenario is reviewed.
