Cervical cancer screening at Ibadan.

Summary

Cervical smear analysis at UCH Ibadan revealed 8.4% cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) and various infections. A simplified management plan for abnormal cervical smears is proposed.

Background:

Cervical cancer screening is crucial for early detection.
Cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN) is a precursor to cervical cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze cervical smear results from University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
To present a simplified management plan for abnormal cervical smears.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 3171 cervical smears over 44 months.
Classification of smear findings including normal, inflammatory changes, infections, and CIN.
Review of treatment modalities for abnormal smears.

Main Results:

8.4% of smears showed cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN).

20.1% of smears indicated specific infections, and 15.6% showed non-specific inflammatory changes.

44.2% of smears were from asymptomatic women.

Conclusions:

Cervical cytology screening effectively identifies CIN and infections.

The study highlights the importance of cytopathology services in resource-limited settings.
