Nurses and care assistants in long-term care settings showed confidence in recognizing elder abuse, but uncertainty about its definition may hinder detection and management.

Elder abuse is a significant issue in long-term care settings.
Healthcare professionals' perceptions and education on elder abuse are crucial for its identification and management.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess nurses' and care assistants' perceptions of elder abuse.
To determine if staff in long-term care settings received education on elder abuse.

Main Methods:

A quantitative descriptive co-relational study was conducted.
Data were collected via questionnaires from 66 nurses and 48 care assistants in three southern Ireland long-term care facilities.

Main Results:

59% of nurses and 52% of care assistants felt confident in recognizing elder abuse.
