Background:

Graduate medical education requires effective training tools.
Traditional video teleconference (VTC) has limitations in interactive learning.
Virtual medical simulation offers potential for enhanced remote training.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of web-based application sharing of virtual medical simulation software.
To assess its utility as a training tool within multipoint VTC for graduate medical education.

Main Methods:

Radiation oncology residents and attending physicians participated in dosimetry teaching sessions.
Sessions utilized VTC with Acrobat Connect application sharing for interactive software use.
Surveys were administered weekly and at the end of a 3-month trial to assess effectiveness.

Main Results:

Weekly surveys indicated a mean enhancement of 0.8 across quality measures.
Final surveys showed a mean improvement of 1.5 when comparing application sharing with VTC to VTC alone.
Residents perceived the combined approach as a better learning experience.

Conclusions:

Multipoint VTC complemented by application-sharing software is perceived as more effective for teaching.
Virtual medical simulation integrated with VTC improves the learning experience in graduate medical education.
Adobe Acrobat Connect application sharing enhances dosimetry training efficacy.
