Guidelines For Measuring Vital Signs01:19

Guidelines For Measuring Vital Signs

Following these guidelines can help nurses accurately measure vital signs, assess changes in patient conditions, and provide timely treatment when necessary. Adhering closely to the guidelines ensures the accuracy and reliability of the results.
Before taking a patient's vital signs, a nurse would consider and assess the patient's comfort level and ensure appropriate equipment is available.

Summary

The OMNI scale accurately estimates perceived exertion threshold (PET) and critical power (CP) during cycling. However, the nonexhaustive PET range (5-8) is not a valid measure of maximal sustainable power output.

Area of Science:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Sports Science
  • Human Performance

Background:

  • Perceived exertion is a key indicator of exercise intensity.
  • The Borg scale is widely used, but pictorial scales like OMNI may improve usability.
  • Validating new scales against established measures is crucial for practical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the OMNI scale's utility in estimating perceived exertion threshold (PET) and nonexhaustive PET during cycling.
  • To compare and correlate OMNI-derived PET with Borg scale-derived PET (PETBorg) and critical power (CP).
  • To determine the validity of the OMNI scale's 5-8 rating range for nonexhaustive PET estimation.

Main Methods:

  • 13 men completed exhaustive cycle ergometer tests using both Borg and OMNI scales on separate days.
  • Perceived exertion threshold (PET) was determined by plotting perceived exertion against power output and finding the regression line's intersection.
  • Critical power (CP) was calculated using a hyperbolic relationship between power output and time to exhaustion.

Main Results:

  • OMNI-derived PET (PETOMNI) was similar to and significantly correlated with PETBorg.
  • OMNI-derived nonexhaustive PET (PETOMNI5-8) was similar to PETBorg14-17 but not significantly correlated.
  • All PET estimates, except PETOMNI5-8, were similar to and significantly correlated with OMNI and Borg-derived CP.

Conclusions:

  • The OMNI cycling scale is a valid tool for estimating PET and CP during exhaustive exercise.
  • The nonexhaustive PET range (5-8) on the OMNI scale is not a reliable indicator of maximal sustainable power.
  • Aerobic fitness can be assessed using the OMNI scale for PET estimation during maximal effort tests.
