Summary

Histoplasmosis panniculitis developed in a patient receiving steroid therapy for myelodysplasia-induced pancytopenia. This rare skin manifestation of disseminated histoplasmosis is important to consider in immunocompromised patients.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Mycology
  • Dermatology
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Disseminated histoplasmosis is a systemic fungal infection.
  • Cutaneous manifestations are uncommon but can occur in immunocompromised individuals.
  • Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders.

Observation:

  • A patient with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) developed pancytopenia.
  • The patient was undergoing steroid therapy for pancytopenia.
  • Histoplasmosis panniculitis, a rare skin condition, manifested during treatment.

Findings:

  • Histoplasmosis panniculitis developed in the context of immunosuppression due to steroid therapy for MDS.
  • This case highlights an unusual presentation of disseminated histoplasmosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Cutaneous involvement in disseminated histoplasmosis is rare but significant.
  • Implications:

    • Increased awareness of histoplasmosis panniculitis is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment.
    • Immunocompromised populations, including organ transplant recipients and those with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), are at higher risk.
    • This case underscores the importance of considering fungal infections in patients with hematologic disorders and immunosuppression.
